Adrienne Francis WSC 001 – F40 Dr. Papper 5 October, 2009 Essay # 1 First Draft #1 Shameless Promotion Every advertiser tries to promote their crossbreeding in such a way that it appeals to their target audience. near ads show the benefits wizard would receive if they use the advertised product. work ads show smiling, excited kids enjoying the advertised toys. Cosmetic ads show serene skinned, clear complexioned people whose skin appears to be that way because they beat used the advertised product. But some ads everyplace-exaggerate the benefits of their product and in some cases even use sexist and demeaning ways of promoting it. An example of such is this 1972 Tipalet cigarette ad published in Playboy magazine. At first glance the first involvement that catches one’s eye is the large, bright, and long-lashed eyes of a wo earth. The wo man, elegantly dressed in white, is exceptionally beautiful; she is of golden brown complexion and has flattering, long dark brown hair. She is seemingly perfective aspect tense; in fact, the only thing that seems to be incorrect with her is the weed that is covering half her face. The rat draws one’s tending to a smug- flavor man dressed in black, who happens to be blowing the smoke of a Tipalet cigarette into the face of the beautiful woman.

An ordinary looking man, he is not nearly as attractive as the woman, but she appears to be mesmerized by the man as she gazes intently into his eyes. Behind all this is the perfervid yellowish-gold colored cathode-ray oscilloscope that draws one into the ad. Once one gets over the image of the man and ! woman, his eyes are drawn to the gossamer white caseful that reads, “Blow in her face and she’ll get married you anywhere.” Lastly one is drawn to the actual text of the advertisement which promotes the brand-new Tipalet flavored cigarettes. This ad was blatantly targeted to men, especially because it was published in Playboy (a man’s magazine).
